Types of 'Thullal'

1. Seethankan Thullal
'Seethankan' is the caste name of 'pulayar'. Tender palm leaves are the main decoration of their traditional dances. So they are also using palm leaves as the costume for 'seethankan thullal'. The 'seethankan thullal' song is recited faster than 'parayan thullal'.
2. Parayan Thullal
'Parayans'(a caste) are the spokesmen of 'parayan thullal'. It's costumes are related to the traditional costumes of 'parayans'. The song is sung in a low tone.
3. Ottan Thuallal
In this the dance song is sung faster than seethankan and parayan thullal. This may be the reason to get its name. The old form of 'ottan thullal' can be seen in 'kolam thullal' of 'kaniyaans'. It has been said that the manner of using green paint on face may be adopted from 'kolam thullal' by kunjan nambyar.
Thus the three types of 'thullal' are related to traditional art forms.

Metres of Thullal (Thullal Vrithangal)
'Tharangini' is the main metre(vritham) of Thullal compositions. 'oonatharangini', 'kaakali', 'kalakanchi', 'mallika', 'madhamandhara' are the other metres used in it.
